How to Keep Your Wood Shutters in Toronto Clean

May 04, 2018

Wood shutters in Toronto are a great way of adding utility and making an aesthetic statement. At California Shutters we have designed and created many different types of shutters to our customers’ wishes. In fact, we can confidently say there are more types of wood shutters in Toronto than you could possibly imagine; just look at our gallery.

But once you have got your shutters, focus must turn to maintaining them. Specifically, in this blog, we talk about the ways in which you can keep your wood shutters clean in Toronto. After all, you don’t want to look out of the window and glance through dusty shutters, now, do you.

Excessive use of water and cleaning agents will damage the finish of your wood shutters and make them lose their sheen.

Know Your Material – First things first, be mindful of the material your wood shutters are made of. Some wood and wood finishing can be damaged or worn off by chemicals in soap, and even because of repeated contact with water. Timber will require gentler cleaning and minimal use of water as opposed to say something made of polywood, which is much more resilient.

Brush it off – Start off with the small stuff: a small brush or dry microfiber cloth to wipe the dust off the shutter louvres. Depending on the rigidity and strength of your shutters, you can consider using a specialized brush which wipes the top and bottom of louvres simultaneously.

Spot it – Spots or small stains on wood shutters often come off with just a damp cloth – no cleaning agent required. However, for tougher stains, which may streak, the best option is to use a mild soap. Dish soap is not recommended for this for the potential to damage the finish of your wood shutters in Toronto. Laundry detergent or something milder still are better bets.

Greased up – Grease can accumulate on wood shutters over time. Especially if the shutters are placed in or near kitchens, grease build-up is inevitable. Again, using a mild soap is better than destroying the finish of the shutter with harsh cleaning chemicals. Also, use only as little water as is required for your wood shutters in Toronto.

Polish – Furniture or other polish recommended for your type of shutter is a great option to keep your shutters clean and looking fresh. With a fresh coat of polish every once in a while, you protect the wood and keep that same shine when new.
