Cleaning Tips For Different Types of Window Shutters

March 21, 2022

Window shutters are a necessary addition to a modern home, as they protect the inhabitants from the elements as well as control the amount of light entering the room. Moreover, a tasteful design and colour scheme that matches your house is an additional bonus. However, just like other aspects of the property, window shutters also need to be cleaned regularly. That being said, different types of shutters require varying cleaning protocols. To further elaborate, here are some cleaning tips for plantation, vinyl and wood shutters.

Tips To Effectively Clean Window Shutters

Plantation Shutters

Plantation shutters can be cleaned in two ways, the dry method and the wet method. The dry method simply involves dusting the slats of the shutter with a microfiber cloth. Alternatively, you can also use a vacuum cleaner to get the job done. Start cleaning from top to bottom to effectively remove any dust and debris in one stroke.

In case of stubborn particles and contaminants, create a mixture of soap, water and vinegar and dip a cleaning cloth in it. Make sure to wring it almost dry before you wipe the surface of the shutters. Ultimately, the frequency of cleaning depends on personal preference, the location of the shutters and the geography of your property.

Vinyl Shutters

Since this is made from a synthetic material, dry dusting usually works best for such window shutters. Use a feather duster or a dust cloth to wipe the slats of the shutters from the top to the bottom. Once all the slats are covered, flip them and clean the other side. Moreover, don’t forget to clean the window sill as well, as the dust tends to accumulate there. For more deep cleaning, use a special, non-silicone spray to clean the slats instead of just water.

Wood Shutters

Wood shutters are quite robust, but they don’t respond well to dampness, hence try to avoid using water, unless absolutely necessary. Ideally, use a soft cloth to gently clean the various slats, corners and crevices of the wood shutters. Occasionally, you can spray the cloth with furniture polish and clean the shutters with it to help maintain its shine.

In case the shutters have accumulated significant dirt, use a mixture of detergent and lukewarm water. Dip a cleaning cloth in it and make sure that it is almost dry so that the shutters are exposed to minimal moisture.

By following these simple cleaning tips, you can significantly prolong the life of your window shutters.
