How To Prep A Wood Plantation Shutter For Repainting

July 20, 2022

Wood shutters are considered classy and timeless, due to their quality and superior finish. A quality wood plantation shutter can last decades, if not longer, only requiring frequent cleaning and repainting every few years. However, repainting a wood shutter is not as straightforward as you think. If you decide to do the repainting by yourself, then you need to know about a few preliminary steps to prepare the shutter for the process. Here are 3 steps to prep a wooden shutter for repainting.

How to Repaint a Wood Shutter?

Remove The Shutter

The first step is to remove the shutter, as it isn’t possible to do the repainting while it is attached to the frame. Also, remove the frames from the walls by prying out the nails. If there are multiple shutters that need repainting, make note of each individual shutter with a marking, as each one is subtly different from the other, and won’t snugly in every frame.

Clean And Polish The Shutters

The shutter’s surface might not be evenly polished or smooth. Hence, it's vital to clean and smoothen it thoroughly before painting, or else it wouldn’t stick to the surface. You can use a vacuum cleaner, feather duster or dry cloth to clean the surface. For more stubborn contaminants, try out a liquid sander for thorough cleaning to save time.

Use A Primer

Painting without a coat of primer is a recipe for disaster. Use a water-based primer to create a smooth surface on the shutter so that new paint can easily adhere to it. Ideally, opt for a spray can instead of a paintbrush to save up on time and achieve an even coating.

Thus, by following these 3 preliminary steps, you can repaint your wood shutters perfectly.
