Interior window shutters are usually on the inside part of a room. They can be made from different types of wood materials and synthetic materials. They open towards the inner side, hence let in air. Some interior shutters have operable louvers. Availability of slats in them enhances free flow of air when opened. Others have fixed louvers that are non rotary. Window shutters can have a single tier that are arranged in a single layer or a multiple tier. For the single tier, the shutters at the top depend on those at the bottom in their movement. The multiple tiers have the top and bottom shutters independent. Some window shutters cover the bottom part of the window. These are known as the cafe types.

Exterior window shutters can be of two types, namely; functional and non functional. Non functional window shutters are mainly for boosting the beauty of a home.
