Types of Wood Shutters

September 12, 2016

Wood shutters in Toronto are a wonderful accent for your home.  Originally, shutters were made of wood, and they are still one of the most durable and beautiful materials to use for your chosen window treatment. There are many different styles of wood shutters available, so you are sure to find the perfect style for your tastes.

Perhaps the most familiar style of shutters is louvered.  Louvers are the horizontal slats that we tend to associate with shutters.  Louvers were originally designed to let in light and air, but today they may just give a certain look to your wood shutters in Toronto.  However, there are still some types of shutters with moveable louvers, which can be adjusted to control sunlight.

Louvers on shutters can be thick or thin, as well as moveable or stationary. One popular type of louvered shutters is plantation shutters, which have wide louvers which can be adjusted to varying levels of open or closed.  Another louvered style is café style shutters, which only cover the bottom half of a window, leaving the top open.

Still another type of shutters is the panel style.  Some styles have raised panels, while some are flat, such as in the unadorned Shaker style.  Panel shutters can be very elegant or very rustic, depending on the design.

There are also board and batten shutters, sometimes known as BnB.  This style is made up of vertical boards fastened together with horizontals “battens.”  The plain design of this type of shutters gives a simple, country charm to a house.

It is important to decide which look and style of shutters is the right fit for your home and your needs.  A company such as California Shutters can show you the different styles available to help you choose the perfect wood shutters for your Toronto home.
